Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA)

2-day classroom training plus workshop

Process plants can pose both plant-related and process specific hazards to people and the environment. Therefore, risk assessment is a legal obligation of the employer and/or process owner in most regions of the world. In manufacturing processes process hazard analysis is used to identify potentially hazardous event scenarios and assess the process risk in a qualitative way. A semi-quantitative evaluation of existing and additional protection layers and their impact to the overall risk of failure scenarios can be obtained by LOPA.

Part 1 – Training:
  • LOPA and how it is linked with other elements of a Process Management System
  • When to use LOPA and when not
  • What LOPA is and how it works
  • LOPA Team Make-up
  • Process Risk Determination
  • LOPA specific Terms and Definitions
  • How to develop a LOPA-Scenario
  • Characterization of Independent Protection Layers (IPLs)
  • Basics of Functional Safety (SIF, SIS, SIL)
  • Determination of the Probability of Failure on Demand for IPLs
  • Basic Control System and Human Failures
  • Low demand mode vs. High demand mode
  • Documentation of LOPA-Scenarios
  • Making Recommendations
Part 2 - Workshop:
  • Exercise: Application of the LOPA-method to failure scenarios
Who should join this course?
PHA-Resources, PSM-Leaders, Project-Engineers, Area Supervisor, Process Engineers, Instrumentation & Control Engineers, Area Engineers
Objectives
This course will introduce you to the basic knowledge about the LOPA methodology, the evaluation of independent protection layers & allow you to apply this method to sample cases as part of the associated workshop.
Seminarleiter Ingo Ludwig | Principal Consultant Process Safety
Trainer + Instructor
Ingo Ludwig | Principal Consultant Process Safety REMBE® GmbH Safety+Control

Ingo started his career in the resin development lab of Herberts (Hoechst, Germany) with different leadership roles in resin and paint operation units in Germany and Mexico. Later, as Global Leader of “Reactor Safety” under the ownership of Axalta Coating Systems, he became member of the Corporate PSM Leadership Board. Besides the Corporate LOPA-Organization and associated trainings, he also provided trainings for Reactor Safety-, PHA- and PSM-Resources, contributed to the elaboration of associated standards and participated in more than 50 company-internal and -external PSM and Reactor Safety Audits. At REMBE®, Ingo is supporting companies with the implementation of their safety goals. In addition to LOPA as one of the elements, our REMBE® Safetyneering contains four additional components for maximum plant safety.

Theoretical and practical knowledge about rupture discs

2-day classroom seminar

Find out everything you need to know about rupture discs and rupture discs in combination with safety valves – from design to application and professional installation. In this seminar, participants are trained on topics relating to rupture discs, types of rupture discs, application limits and special challenges as well as signaling options and various connection options. The assembly and disassembly of the rupture discs and corresponding bursting tests on the REMBE® test rig show the participants how complex the topic of rupture discs is and how sensitively these components should be handled. Our REMBE® authorised partner programme is specifically designed to support service companies and maintenance engineers in the correct handling of mechanical protective devices. Participants are trained by REMBE® during the seminar at our headquarters in Brilon, Germany and will be certified afterwards. You can find further information about the programme here.

Content:
  • Selection and design of the correct REMBE® high-performance rupture disc
  • Tips for error-free handling of safety equipment
  • Application limits and challenges
  • Signalling options
  • Assembly and disassembly of rupture discs
